Hat #9: Steampunk Hat

Hello all! I'm back on hats now. :) Yay!!! I knew you were wondering about it.

I don't really know why I called this a Steampunk Hat, but I thought it had some qualities that might put it in that category. The color is an amazing dark green khaki color that would fit right into that genre, and I love the little corseted side bit.

Plus the brim I crocheted on the end made for a really neat newsboy style that I adore!

I love the way the ribbon jumps out and yells "HEY I AM RIGHT HERE DO YOU SEE ME I AM A BIG PINK RIBBON!!"

Pattern is below the jump - enjoy!!!

So this was sort of knit up on a whim. I didn't really know what I was doing, but ultimately I got what I was hoping to get out of it, so here's what I did!

Materials:

1 skein heavy worsted or Aran weight yarn
Size 10 16" circs (you won't be knitting in the round for a while on this hat, so have some DPNs handy too if you want)
Size US G crochet hook

Directions:

Cast on 63 stitches using the knit-on method. Do NOT join in the round yet! You'll be working back and forth for the first several rows.

Hat body:
Rows 1-4: K1, P1 (moss stitch)
Row 5: K to end
Row 6: P to end
Row 7: K1, K2tog, YO twice, K2tog, K until last 5 stitches, K2tog, YO twice, K2tog, K1
Row 8: P2, P into first YO, yarn to back, K into second YO, yarn to front, P until next YO, P into first YO, yarn to back, K into second YO, yarn to front, P to end
Row 9: K to end
Row 10: P to end
Row 11: K to end
Row 12: P to end

Repeat rows 7-12 two more times so you end up with three "eyelets" on each end.

Join in the round:
K 1 row
P 1 row
K 1 row then JOIN to work in the round
K 1 round, adding ONE K stitch into the gap created by the joining stitch in the previous round

Decrease Rounds:
Round 1: *K6, K2tog, repeat from * around
Round 2: K around
Round 3: *K6, K2tog, repeat from * around
Round 4: K around
Round 5: *K5, K2tog, repeat from * around
Round 6: K around
Round 7: *K4, K2tog, repeat from * around
Round 8: K around
Round 9: *K3, K2tog, repeat from * around
Round 10: K around
Round 11: *K2, K2tog, repeat from * around
Round 12: K around
Round 13: *K1, K2tog, repeat from * around
Round 14: K around
Round 15: K2tog around

Cut yarn and pull end through active stitches and pull tightly like a drawstring. Weave in ends.

Crochet Brim:
Using a size G crochet hook, with work facing you, sl st into the first K stitch AFTER the moss stitch band (you'll be knitting this brim ABOVE the band to make sure it goes the right direction).

SC into all K stitches until you reach the mid-point of the hat (around 36 stitches).

Turn work, do not chain.

SC into all stitches until you reach the sl st from the first row. SC into the sl st. Turn work, do not chain.

SC into all stitches...

Repeat as described for a total of 5 rows of SC. The lack of chaining at the end of each row should cause a slight decrease at the ends of each row, giving the brim a trapeqoidal shape.

Cut yarn and pull through last stitch and tighten.

Finishing the hat:
Weave all ends in.

Lace a ribbon through the six eyelets in the side of the hat like a shoelace or a corset, starting from the top. Tie a bow at the bottom.

Enjoy!!!

XOXO
